Day 11
January 13
Mark 13
Mark 13 contains repeated warnings that, as the end draws near, God’s people must be on constant alert to religious deception. Jesus says, “Watch out” (vs. 9 & 23), “Be on guard! Stay alert” (vs. 33), “Therefore, keep watch” (vs. 35), and “Watch!” (vs. 37). These warnings indicate that many unbiblical teachings will be prominent among churches. The follower of JESUS is intended to PURSUE Jesus and know His WORD for themselves. We should be like the Bereans in:
Acts 17:11 – NLT – “And the people of Berea were more open-minded than those in Thessalonica, and they listened eagerly to Paul’s message. They searched the Scriptures day after day to see if Paul and Silas were teaching the truth.”
They were PURSUING the TRUTH! Their baseline for whether something was true or not was whether it was backed up in Scripture. If it wasn’t true THERE, it wasn’t true. Paul declared them “open minded” and “eager” and inferred that we should be that way too.
So, let us heed Christ’s warnings in Mark 13 and make sure that we are PURSUING HIS TRUTH! Also, He points out in verse 9 that we should expect a certain level of persecution for pursuing and believing and sharing His truth. When we experience that, don’t waste it. Use that as an opportunity to share His truth!
What are ways that you use to discern what is true? How can you tell? What is your baseline for whether something is true or not?
